Devotion to Bhagwan Shree Dattatreya has been a family tradition for most of my life of about sixty-five years and we have prayed to Him regularly by chanting His name and performing rituals of His worship. Perhaps, as a fruit of those karmas, I was initiated by His Holiness Sadguru Shree Gulavani Maharaj (“Gulavani Maharaj”), about twenty-eight years ago.
His Holiness Sadguru Shree Mama Deshpande (“Mama”) used to come to Sangli, a city in the state of Maharashtra in western India, almost every year. During one of His visits, for a discourse in 1981, I came to know that He was a devoted disciple of my Sadguru Shree. Gulavani Maharaj and it increased my curiosity to meet Him. When I introduced myself to Him as also an initiate of Gulavani Maharaj, He was overjoyed, and held my palms and placed it on His forehead. This was His way of showing respect to His Guru and all the initiates of His Guru, whom He considered His own brothers and sisters. As I got to know Him well, I was struck by His loving-nature and kindness and I became very fond of Him.
Eventually, He blessed my son by getting him initiated in this spiritual path through Shaktipaat – yog deeksha, and it is only because of Him that my son completed his education, got a good job and is now happily settled in life. After completing his education, my son had applied for a job at a bank. Since such jobs are usually very competitive and involve a multi-step difficult process such as written tests, interviews, etc., I was very unsure and anxious about his success. So, I reached out to Shree Mama who was visiting ShreeKshetra Nrusimhawadi, a pilgrimage place near Kolhapur in Maharashtra, and wrote to Him saying “Please pray to Bhagwan Shree Datta-prabhu on my behalf for the success of my son’s efforts in securing the job”. Mama wrote back saying, “I had a vision in my dreams that Bhagwan Shree Datta-prabhu himself ‘has taken responsibility’ to get him the job.” Since then, there was no doubt left in my mind and my son did get the job he was seeking.
In 1972-73, my wife got severely ill. Doctors anticipated about 6 months for her to make a complete recovery. But I kept up with my daily sadhana routine and, while I was meditating one morning, His Holiness Bhagwan Shree Nrusimha Saraswati Swami Maharaj appeared in my vision and said, “I have blessed her with my vibhuti, do not worry. She’ll get well soon.” Just as predicted, she got better within a month.
I feel very blessed that Bhagwan Shree Dattaprabhu has appeared in several of my visions. Once at Mahurgad, He blessed me with vibhuti packets and another time in Ganagapur, He provided a packet of sweets as prasad. Many times, His Holiness, Bhagwan Shree Nrusimha Saraswati Swami Maharaj has directly or indirectly given me much-needed crucial advice during difficult times and have always been saved by His Grace.
Whenever I had an opportunity to travel to Pune, I would make it a point to visit Shree Mama. On one such visit, my relative Dr. Hardikar wished to join me to meet Mama. A well-accomplished surgeon, Dr. Hardikar seemed to be troubled with ongoing issues at his hospital and he wanted to request Mama to visit the hospital and assess the situation. Mama agreed and visited the hospital with him. After understanding the details of the problem at the hospital, Mama advised him to sprinkle some vibhuti (holy ash) in those rooms that seemed to be troublesome. Doing so, cleared those rooms of any bad omens and remained trouble-free ever since..
During His trips to Sangli, Mama would visit sadhaks in the area and sometimes would ask me to accompany Him. Once, while in Ratnagiri, He stayed with Mr. Agashe and I had the good fortune of meeting Him there. At that time, He presented me with a copy of the book, ‘Paila Meru chya Shikari’, which was published on the occasion of Mama’s 75th birthday. I have treasured that book with great respect and fondness for Him to this day.
Such was the divinity of Mama and I will forever cherish those beautiful memories.
